Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems

Richard Ferber, M.D.

What on earth is a review of this book doing here? I can hear the question now! This book was recommended by my therapist in hope that understanding sleep better would help my insomnia.

Most of the book is geared to getting children to sleep through the night, so I'm not sure I'd recommend anyone buying this book, but if it's available through your library, it's worth the read to understand what's considered "normal" sleep and how to establish better habits to encourage sleep. It's an easy read (though I doubt it would be easy to implement his program for kids), and provided comprehensive information that would have taken a long time to research in other books.

While I don't encourage "Ferber-izing" anyone - least of all kids - I found the following segments very helpful for myself:

- general information about sleep
- developing good sleep patterns
- biological rhythms
- sleep phase shifts
- sleep interruptions (walking, thrashing, terrors)
- nightmares
